Technical insights
Valuable networking
Authentic Icelandic experiences

Iceland Challenge DMC proudly hosted a technical study visit to Iceland for members of the Talonrakennusteollisuus ry, representing leading construction companies in Finland.
The purpose of the visit was to explore how construction and infrastructure projects are developed and operated in Iceland’s unique and demanding environment — shaped by volcanic activity, geothermal energy, rapidly changing weather conditions, and challenging natural landscapes.
During the five-day program, the delegation gained valuable insight into Icelandic approaches to sustainable development, geothermal innovation, urban planning, and construction resilience.
One of the key technical visits included the Hellisheidi Geothermal Power Station and the internationally recognized Carbfix injection site, where participants learned about carbon mineralization technology and Iceland’s pioneering role in renewable energy solutions.
The group also visited the defense wall in Grindavik, gaining insight into Iceland’s response to recent volcanic activity and the large-scale infrastructure and protection measures developed to safeguard local communities, critical infrastructure, and the nearby Blue Lagoon area.
An important part of the technical program was a visit to the SI - The Federation of Icelandic Industries, one of the largest and most influential employer and industry organizations in Iceland, representing companies across construction, manufacturing, energy, innovation, and other industrial sectors.
During the meeting, the Finnish delegation and Icelandic industry representatives discussed the current situation in the construction sector in both Iceland and Finland, comparing market conditions, labor challenges, housing development, sustainability goals, and future industry trends. The participants exchanged professional opinions and ideas about the future of the construction industry, innovation, infrastructure development, and international cooperation. The visit also created valuable networking opportunities, allowing participants to establish new professional contacts and strengthen connections between the Icelandic and Finnish construction industries.
The delegation focused on understanding how Icelandic engineers and developers adapt construction practices to:
-
Volcanic and seismic activity
-
Harsh winter weather and strong winds
-
Geothermal ground conditions
-
Remote logistics and infrastructure challenges
-
Sustainable and energy-efficient building solutions
Alongside the technical program, participants experienced some of Iceland’s most iconic locations, including Thingvellir National Park, Geysir, Gullfoss, and many others.
The group was delighted to see numerous whales during a whale-watching tour departing from the Old Harbour in Reykjavik. They also explored Iceland through the immersive FlyOver Iceland experience and discovered Reykjavik on a customised walking tour with a Finnish-speaking guide.
An Icelandic geothermal bathing experience at the newly opened and cozy Laugaras Lagoon became one of the most memorable and relaxing highlights of the program.
The group also enjoyed the famous tomato soup at Friðheimar greenhouse restaurant and an eight-course tasting menu at Grillmarkaðurinn.
The program combined technical expertise, sustainability, networking opportunities, and authentic Icelandic experiences, creating a unique and memorable professional visit for the Finnish delegation.
With extensive experience in incentive travel, technical visits, and professional delegations, Iceland Challenge DMC designed and managed the entire program, including logistics, technical visits, accommodation, transportation, and cultural experiences.
